What it does:
Obsessed with Smudge Pots? You’ll go crazy for Smudge Sticks! This highly pigmented, waterproof eyeliner glides on to deliver intense, vibrant color with staying power. Soft, smooth, and easy on the eyes, Stila Smudge Stick Waterproof Eye Liner creates a high metallic, sultry, inky intensity that lasts.

Suggested Usage:

  • Trace along upper and lower lashes to use as an eye liner.
  • Apply this innovative, flexible formula to your upper and lower lash lines, or use your fingers to smudge into a shadow.
  • Once it sets, the soft, modern finish won’t move or crease.
  • No sharpener necessary, simply twist and apply the instant color-release formula for fuss-free, fade-proof pigment.
  • Note: the propel pencil does not retract.

My Thoughts:

This pencil came in one of the Stila “In the…” sets, the In the Light palette in particular, I think. Awesome that it came as a full-size eyeliner with the eyeshadows and a look book with a few look tutorials for those who are need or want a bit of guidance. It’s nice that the scent isn’t strong, but it does contain a faint chemical smell that may deter those who have hyper-sensitive senses of smell that get migraines or headaches triggered by certain smells.

Packaging:                                                ★★★★★/5

The cap isn’t the most reliable, but with it’s skinny form, it fits perfectly in the pencil pouch that most of my bags have, which leaves me with a secure place to hold it when I bring it along with me during the day. I LOVE that it is a twist-up product instead of requiring sharpening because if it’s maintenance required the latter, repurchasing this would’ve been a deal breaker. Since the product itself is really thin and it doesn’t provide much space for artwork or product info, I like that it keeps the info minimal and to-the-point. With just a brief description of what this product is, the color and company info, all surrounded by cute, little stars.

Performance/Wear:                               ★★★★★/5

This shade provides an ultra-dark blackish-brown color with a matte finish. When worn as an eyeliner, it looks almost black, but when smudged out, it regains the brown pigment. Being a brown shade, it works so well for neutral looks and for accent effects for pink or purple eye looks. When I wear it on my water lines, it doesn’t maintain its ‘waterproof’ formula, but when work on my lash lines or as an eyeshadow, it holds up to sweat, tears, and water without a fuss.

One of the major benefits of the versatility of the formula is how creamy it applies upon initial application, yet once it dries, it is budge-proof. Given that, I only have about 10-15 seconds to smudge out the color before it dries and I have to accept how the color sits. That may sound like a nuisance of an issue, but I’d much rather a formula dry and not risk it creasing or running vs a product that doesn’t dry and gives me more time to smudge it around, but creases and runs down my eyes and make me look like a hungover racoon.

On another note, it can double as a cream bronzer by applying a single swipe under the cheekbones and smudging out with my beautyblender sponge. For me, it is more on the dramatic contour side of face makeup because of how dark of a color it is compared to my fair skin tone. Also, when worn over my foundation, regardless which formula, it doesn’t retain the waterproof feature because it dilutes the formula when mixed over whatever foundation I use.

Skin Swatch

I rarely need touch-ups throughout the day or night, but I bring it along on the days I use it on my water lines when it runs out of my eyes and creates the ugliest of eye boogers. This is one of the few eyeliners that doesn’t make my eyes water and burn profusely when I use it around my eye areas, especially in my water lines. The color doesn’t oxidize so what you see in the pencil, is the exact color you get during application and wear time.

It doesn’t fade, feather, or break up in any way when worn, and at the end of the day, it is easy to remove with my favorite makeup remover. For being a waterproof formula, it doesn’t take endless scrubbing to get it off completely. It really is a great eyeliner and I recommend it to many of my clients.

Price:                                                          ★★★★★/5

The price is a bit steep when you think about how much product you get for what you’re paying, but since I got this in the palette, it paid for over half of the cost of the palette which was a huge win for me. Compared to many other eyeliner formulas that promise to be waterproof, this is by far up in the league with the best of them. Since this also can be multi-purpose, it further makes adds to its value.
