Smashbox – Always Sharp Lip Liner (Crimson)

Product Info

Online Description:

What it is: A long-wearing, water-resistant lip liner that maintains a precise tip by automatically self-sharpening with every twist of the cap. What it does: This innovative liner features a built-in self-sharpener that ensures a precise tip that sharpens when you twist the cap. The long-wear, water-resistant, and non-feathering formula is color matched for wear with an array of lip colors, and the precision tip enhances the shape of lips and accentuates the Cupid’s bow for fullness. What else you need to know: This liner can also be applied all over lips as a base for lip color. Use Punked as a transformer shade to darken and deepen lipsticks.  This product is cruelty-free and is formulated without sodium lauryl sulfate, oil, fragrance, talc, or alcohol. It is also vegan.

Suggested Usage:  To sharpen:  -Simply twist the cap closed. When you hear a click, stop twisting.  To create the illusion of plumper lips:  -Start with your upper lip.  -Trace just outside your natural lip line, working your way from the outer corner towards the Cupid’s bow.  -Outline your lower lip, starting at the outer corner, working your way towards the center.  -Finish with your favorite shade of Always On Matte Liquid Lipstick, Be Legendary Liquid Lip, or Be Legendary Lipstick (each sold separately).

My Thoughts:

I am not one to intentionally go out and buy a lip liner because most lip products render lip liners obsolete nowadays with superior formulations in comparison to older or cheaper formulas that made lip liners a necessity. This product came into my collection by the awesome sets known as Sephora Favorites and I have invested in the makeup and skincare ones for years and I constantly recommend to my friends to do the same. It’s such a bargain alternative to trying luxury brand products without paying the price for a full-size product from those luxury brands.

The sets normally contain a few full-size products (like this one) with mostly deluxe mini products, all are still at such a steal that it’s insane to turn them down. The smell of the product is quite foul, to be honest, but the overall quality and results makes up for it. I’m not sure if how well it works is worth enough to convince me that I should invest in more lip liners when they’re not necessary anymore, but I do love how well it holds up and works with other products.

Packaging:                                                ★★★★★/5

This is pretty much the best packaging for lip liners that I’ve come across. I love that it doesn’t require sharpening like most other liners, eye or lip, do because that’s so wasteful in my opinion. The twist feature is easy to use, reduces waste, and maintains a constant sharp tip for perfectly precise applications. The plastic material encasing the entire product feels sturdy and impact-resistant which gives me piece of mind that the product not only will stay closed when I travel with it, but that it’ll survive the brutal laziness from TSA agents tossing around my bags.

My only suggestion is not to open and close the lip liner unless you’re going to use it, because then you’re just going to sharpen it uselessly, wasting product by getting more gunked up in the cap. It’s a catch 22, but it’s the best packaging I’ve seen behind regular twist-up products.

Performance/Wear:                               ★★★★★/5

The lip liner is crazy amazing and I’m not being overdramatic. I’ve used many lip liners with many pros and cons, mostly cons because lipsticks no (mostly) no longer need lip liners, but some work really well. This is one of the best lip liners I’ve used to date. It still stands behind my favorite lip liner from Know Cosmetics because that one is clear so I can use it with any color, unlike this one that is designed to be used with red colors.

It glides on effortlessly and gently without any tugging on my skin nor the need to go over the same area numerous times to see decent pigment. It creates a matte finish if worn alone, but it doesn’t enhance dryness in my already dry skin, yet it also doesn’t moisturize my lips either. It does have a weight to it when worn, but it doesn’t feel as heavy as a lipstick. Most lip liners are very dry with their application and they tend to crumble while I apply them, but this doesn’t do that at all. Instead, it applies as smoothly as a creamy lipstick.

The color is a bright red, with a hint of pink to it, giving a flushed, but bold vibe from the wear of it. When it fades, it looks like an ombre effect, but it doesn’t feather. It takes quite some time to fade, even through all my chatter and drinking throughout the day and also doesn’t transfer. It only transfers when mixed with a product that dilutes the product, but even then, it still lasts for hours of wear.

There are no signs of it settling into the vertical lines of my lips that would enhance the look of aging. Since this color is so bright and bold, is holds the same breath-taking look for any complexion that wears this. The downsides to this is that it not only the visible stain on my lips as it fades, but also how difficult it is to remove when I’m washing my face at night. No matter how much I scrub, it slowly breaks down the product enough to smudge it around my mouth, creating a bigger stain.

This product is truly remarkable, but the concept of lip liners is pretty much a dead weight to most beauty regimens. For those who have lip products that they absolutely adore that still need lip liners under them, then I would definitely recommend this. In cases like mine where most of my products don’t need lip liner, I can’t justify recommending spending money on an unnecessary product. Either way, the price for the quality of this product is worth it if you decide to purchase it.
