Nars – Velvet Matte Lip Pencil (Cruella)

Product Info

Online Description:

What it is:
A cult-favorite, matte lip pencil that instantly delivers the impact of a matte lipstick with the spontaneity of a pencil.

What it does:
The NARS Velvet Pencil ensures that lips are instantly saturated with rich, vivid pigments and a velvety matte finish. Its jumbo size provides the application of a lipstick with the convenience of an artist pencil, and the tapered end is perfect for lining, defining, and filling in lips. Its non-drying formula is enriched with vitamin E and emollients for a creamy texture, while a blend of unique silicones ensures long-lasting, seamless matte color for hours. Just pair it with another lip product for added dimension or as a tinted base. Whether it’s soft and neutral or bold and edgy, this lip pencil is ideal for making a lip statement.

What else you need to know:
This product works best with the NARS Pencil Sharpener; other sharpeners may be harmful or damaging.

“I wanted to create a modern way to wear a very classic matte lip. The creaminess of the texture makes them very easy to wear.”—François Nars, Founder and Creative Director of NARS Cosmetics

“Lips are all about fun. Virtually every color can work on everyone. Paired with a soft eye, even the darkest or brightest shade of lip color can create a striking makeup look on its own. With lips more than any other features, I follow a no rules approach.”—François Nars

“Using these as a base for any other lip product makes your color wear much longer. They glide on super easy and stay put!”—Lisa LeSeur, NARS National Makeup Stylist

“I love using Velvet Matte Lip Pencils together to create dimension on the lip—try one shade for lining and another for filling in.”—Shayna Shapiro, NARS Lead Trainer

Suggested Usage:
-Properly moisturize lips before you begin. Light colors can exaggerate dehydrated lips.

My Thoughts:

I got this in a Sephora Favorites set as a deluxe mini and it’s one of the few mattes I can use. The size is almost as big as the full-size, so that’s a plus. The Sephora sets are always a great deal because I get to try a bunch of new products without having to splurge for the full-sizes on each. Plus, a lot of the time, the sets include at least one or two full-size products in them. When I saw this color, it reminded me of the perfect Snow White lip.

The company offers a variety of colors and a lot of them can be multi-purpose which are great bonuses for making the most of the purchase. This color in particular could be used as a blush, just be cautious and use a light hand.

Packaging:                                                ★/5

This part is the biggest setback of the entire product. Between the cap that falls off and the fact that it requires sharpening. The cap seems to find any possible way to fall off so it’s not something I can bring in my bag throughout the day. The pencil is too chubby to fit in any of the sharpeners I have which is a bummer and a nuisance. There is a soft, velvety feeling to the outside of the pencil which is a clever feature to the namesake of the product.

Performance/Wear:                               ★★★★★/5

For being a matte product, this is pretty creamy and easy to apply. It doesn’t provide much conditioning or moisturizing benefits, but it also doesn’t absorb every ounce of moisture in my lips like many other mattes have before. There isn’t an issue with bleeding or feathering so it’s great that there isn’t a need for lip liner, which is great for saving time and money when using this. A little goes a long way because the pigment is bold, even with the lightest touch.

The formula doesn’t seem to settle in the vertical lines in my lips, but it does transfer and smudge, so touch-ups are necessary. When it comes to fading, it doesn’t fade evenly and only when it’s mostly rubbed off, can I see that it sunk into the vertical lines on my lips. It’s cool how it does that but doesn’t look like it does when I look in the mirror after it’s freshly applied. The best part is that it may transfer, but it takes quite some time to fade which adds points to the ‘long-lasting’ aspect.

Price:                                                          ★★/5

The product itself is wonderful, but the fact that it requires sharpening is a deal-breaker for me. Once they repackage it, I’d be more than happy to purchase the full-size. If the company ever does that, I’ll update this section of my review.
