Online Description:

Saturated vivid color meets strong lacquered shine for your most sensational high-shine lip.

WHAT IT IS

Color Sensational® Vivid Hot Lacquer. High-impact lip gloss with an ultra-shiny finish.

BENEFITS

Maybelline’s high-impact gloss goes vivid! Strong lacquered shine and opaque color melt onto the lips for your most impactful lip look.

HOW TO USE/APPLY

Step 1. Apply lip lacquer with the applicator wand in the center of your upper lip and follow the contours of your mouth.

Step 2. Glide the lip lacquer across the entire bottom lip.

My Thoughts:

Y’all know I’m not one to buy drugstore makeup products because I’ve had painful reactions from them, and this product was no different from that mindset. I was sent this by Maybelline through Influenster along with an eyeliner and a mascara for free for my honest reviews of the products. This is the only product out of the 3 that I might repurchase, but only for my kit. I didn’t have a negative reaction with this, but I’d still rather buy a luxury brand with all the benefits that outweigh the ones in this product. There is a sweet smell to it, but as it dries, it starts to smell chemical, but fades after a few minutes.

Packaging:                                                ★★★/5

I’m always a fan of square packaging because it looks more sophisticated with its structured edges. The secure “click” in the wand handle gives me piece of mind that this won’t open up accidentally and cause a mess in my bag. I have to point attention to the wand, because it’s not like most wand tips, and in that, gives this product an advantage over even luxury brands. You can see it’s more like an arrow tip, instead of the angled tip that most wands have on the end. The fabric on the wand provides a gentle application, while the point gives me the ability to apply a single, precise swipe that completely covers my lips.

Another major positive feature is that the tube is clear, except for the handle. The clear tube saves time by allowing me to spot the color I want to use faster than most other tubes that have decorative packaging and I have to open and close numerous products before I find the one I was intending to use. Most of the time, I just get annoyed and end up settling for another, instead. The sticker on the bottom is a bit of a nuisance because it’s constantly falling off and getting stuck to other things.

The plastic material used to wrap this entire thing together is pretty sturdy which is another plus for me. I have some of the clumsiest fingers and drop things all the time, which is probably going to be the key culprit if I get diagnosed with heart problems from all the mini heart attacks I give myself when I drop stuff. Nonetheless, this has faced many hard impacts and has come out scot-free every time.

Performance/Wear:                               ★★★/5

Since we’re being honest, I didn’t expect much from this product when it was sent to me because of my previous experience with drugstore makeup, but I figured I’d try it out nonetheless since it was free. Worst case scenario is that I could give it away to someone who would make use of it if I didn’t want to keep it after trying it out. My sister is usually my go-to for that because she likes trying out new makeup as much as I do and tolerates drugstore makeup better than me.

When I opened the tube and pulled the wand out, I wasn’t sure if it was supposed to be a lipstick or a lip gloss because this seemed far too opaque to be a lip gloss. After wearing it, it even felt more like a cream liquid lipstick than a gloss, but I could definitely see the gloss aspect to it because it was way shinier than any cream lipstick I’ve ever used. The shine dulls a bit once it “dries,” but it still retains quite a bit of shine. It doesn’t really dry, per say, because it still looks like it’s wet the entire time I wear it, but it does feel more solidly adhered to this skin after about 10 minutes compared to how heavy it feels when it’s first applied.

Unfortunately, it does bleed, so lip liner is a must if you want to use this, but luckily, there is no need for lipstick underneath it. Of course, you could still use lipstick, after all, your body, your choice. What I mean is that there’s no need for lipstick because this has plenty of opacity on its own and it’ll bleed regardless if there’s a barrier between your lips or not. What puzzles me is how this doesn’t sink into the vertical lines on my lips, but it bleeds without lip liner. It doesn’t feel like it moisturizes it, instead it feels more like it slightly conditions it. So, I still suggest lip balm under this to prevent getting dry, chapped lips.

The last major downside is that this stains the skin. Albeit, it doesn’t leave a very obscene stain, but a slight one. If you use lip liner over your entire lips or lip balm on your lips and just lip liner to line them, that seems to remedy the problem. Also, washing it off isn’t an issue, to give you an idea of how tolerable the stain is. It does have a transfer and smudge issue, but I don’t hold that against any lipstick anymore because the only lip products I’ve found that don’t transfer or smudge were far too drying and damaging for me.

It doesn’t fade easily, but it does fade evenly. Wait, did I write that correctly? Yeah, it’s an odd sentence, but it’s still valid, I promise. The formula is thick enough that it doesn’t fade easily, even with how much I drink and chatter throughout the day and when it does, it fades evenly, without enhancing any dry spots or magnifying any lines. It’s a positive feature in my book because it bides me a little time until I can touch-up my lips.

Drugstore prices are the best, I’ll admit that. Who would argue with buying a product that works as well as the expensive brands if you came across one? IF. This may be a decent product that I’m willing to add to my kit simply because it didn’t cause a heinous reaction to my skin, but there are still far better products out there that I would rather buy and I like to think my clients would appreciate me investing in products with better quality ingredients to use on them.
