My Thoughts:

This little nugget came in one of the many Sephora Favorites sets I’ve bought and it was love from first swatch. This is quite the small sample of it, since it only lasts me a handful of uses before the brush can’t reach product on the bottom of the tube anymore, but it’s a nice little opportunity to try something I’ve never had before. I’m normally not much of a lip gloss gal, but this is one of those glosses that has me considering my place on the field because of how well it wears and how healthy it feels on my lips.

I’ll be upfront and honest, the smell of it is pretty foul, but don’t let that discourage you, unless you’re someone who has headaches or migraines that are easily triggered by smells. Yes, this smells awful, but the smell fades after a couple minutes and the way this makes my lips feel all day and hours after it’s gone is worth the crinkle in my nose for the first few minutes.

Packaging:                                                ★/5

Of course, there is a slight difference in the packaging for this sample vs the full-size and it’s obviously just the size. I’ve gone into Sephora and checked out the full-size to compare any differences, but it’s really just how large the packaging is. The wand inside both contains the same soft tip that aids the formula in easy and gentle gliding for precise applications and the design is just as simple, yet sophisticated.

The cap is securely attached when it’s closed, giving added piece of mind when this rolls around in my bag throughout the day, rustling with the other inhabitants of my purse. The oblong shape to this tube is intriguing because it’s unique to Hourglass’ products, and the reflective dark gray material gives it a sophisticated, modern vibe to it. The shape may look cool, but it doesn’t make a great companion in my lipstick basket because it can’t stand upright on its own; it has to be up against other products.

I like how the tube has a clear side to it’s packaging, making it much easier to find the color I’m wanting to use on my look that day, instead of forcing me to open and close a bunch of products until I find the right one like many other poorly-planned product packages do.

Performance/Wear:                               ★/5

As mentioned, the smell is very off-putting, but not so much for me that I would consider that a deal-breaker for this product. The company seriously needs to fix that issue because it seems to cost them a lot of patronage when customers return this for the smell alone, but we’ll see if they ever do. Foul scents aside, this truly is an amazing lip gloss that I plan on repurchasing in the future. It isn’t one of those lip glosses that could pass as a lipstick due to intense opacity, but it does have enough pigment to still be a decent lip gloss.

This color in particular is a pale, pink beige that provides substantial pigment, while retaining a sheer, shiny finish. From what I’ve swatched at the Sephora stores, some of the colors are more pigmented as don’t have a sheerness to their finishes. My best suggestion would be to stop by the store yourself and swatch them on your hands to see which you’d think suits your preference.

The formula itself is so remarkably moisturizing and feels so luxurious and rich on my lips. This can be worn many ways, from alone, to over lipstick or lip liner, to mixing with a lipstick on a palette first, then applying and it has yet to show any signs of separation or breakdown of product during the wear time. I have yet to have an issue of bleeding, but since it is a gloss, it is prone to transferring and smudging, so be cautious when changing clothes, drinking, etc. The length of the product lasting for each application will vary on your skin type (dry, oily, etc.), how many times it comes into contact with things it will transfer onto and off your lips, and what products you use with it. I have yet to see this turn into a terrible product by mixing it with a competitor’s product, but it does have some affect on the results. For example, this continues not to bleed when applied over lip liner alone, but some lipsticks do cause the product to bleed when mixed, so it’s almost always a good idea to use a lip liner when intending to use this with a lipstick.

Personally, I have pretty dry skin with fluctuating sensitivity and each application of this worn alone will last me a few hours before I need to reapply. That being said, I usually just drink water from my Hydroflask so I’m not imprinting my lip gloss on a bunch of different cups, but I also do chat a lot, so that might also affect it. When it does fade, it’s even and gradual, leaving a natural color that doesn’t feather or enhance the look of my chapped lips at any point during the wear time. In fact, my lips are left looking and feeling amazing even hours after this has faded from my lips, which is one of my main reason I don’t let the smell hinder my decision on this.

Although this retains a sheer effect, it doesn’t settle into the lines of my lips. I love how I can feel it on my lips because it isn’t lightweight (I’m assuming because of all the conditioning goodness in the formula), but it doesn’t have the same weighty, goopy feeling that most lip glosses have. Yes, my hair will still stick to it on a windy day, but it doesn’t feel like my lips will stick to each other. This color in particular gives a more youthful look to my face, which, what woman would ever hate that benefit?

Skin Swatch

Is it a bit steep for how much you get in each tube, sure, but it’s all about preventative care for your face while you indulge in the joys of makeup. You don’t want to be using cheap products that cause damage to your skin and increase the signs of aging on your face to set on earlier than they should when you could’ve been using high-quality ingredients that help protect your skin and save you more money along the way than the forkload most people hand over to try to reverse the damage. Between how amazing this makes my lips feel to the sleek and secure packaging that gives me piece of mind that I won’t be surprised by a mess in my bag, this lip gloss is a win, hands down.
