Nars – Satin Lip Pencil (Rikugien)

Front

Online Description:

What it is:
A modern, long-wearing, vitamin-enriched, jumbo lip pencil that provides lasting wear and imparts intense, vibrant color with a satin finish.

What it does:
Satin Lip Pencil comes in a selection of high-impact, fashion-forward shades in a rich, creamy satin finish that stays on all day. Convenient pencil allows for easy and precise application, perfect for using as a liner for dramatically defined lips or as a finishing touch to create and mix your own unique lip color. Each vitamin-enriched shade, named for the world’s most lush parks and gardens, hydrates and protects lips while also making lips look fuller.

What else you need to know:
“Lips are all about fun. Virtually every color can work on everyone. Paired with a soft eye, even the darkest or brightest shade of lip color can create a striking makeup look on its own. With lips more than any other features, I follow a no rules approach.”—François Nars, Founder and Creative Director of NARS Cosmetics

“I see the strength of rich, smoldering lips against a fresh face.”—François Nars,

This product works best with NARS Pencil Sharpener; other sharpeners may be harmful or damaging.

Suggested Usage:
-Apply pencil directly to the lips.
-Define, then fill in the entire lip area or use as a liner only and fill with any NARS lip product.
-For more intensity, layer over Velvet Matte Lip Pencil.
-For perfect multidimensional color, layer over Velvet Lip Liner.

Artist tips:
-Apply Pencil all over lips and finish with a touch of gloss in the center of the lip.
-Properly moisturize lips before you begin. Light colors can exaggerate dehydrated lips.

My Thoughts:

I got this deluxe mini from the birthday gift set from Sephora with another lip pencil called Cruella and I immediately was a bit bummed knowing it was a product that required sharpening. On the plus side, I was able to try two expensive lip products for free at almost full-size, so I don’t really have much to complain about. I would like to say upfront that my decision to not purchase this once I’ve used it all up isn’t based on the quality of the lipstick itself, but merely on the fact that it requires sharpening.

I tried this color in a makeup look before Cruella, which is obvious when you look at most of the looks I wear, because it’s a nice, dusty rose color that works with any look. You will rarely ever see me complaining about free makeup, especially luxury makeup, but unless they repackage this, I won’t be purchasing it. The color range they have for this line is nice and broad with 10 choices, but it isn’t like some other brands that have an overwhelming amount of options which turn shopping into a chore.

Rikugien comes in a rose-pink color that is a bit lighter than my natural lip color, but still works great for my preferred natural looks.

Packaging:                                                ★/5

Those who’ve read some of my previous reviews know I don’t like pencil products that require sharpening, so this immediately was a bust. In my opinion, sharpening wastes product by forcing me to toss out half of my product because of the accumulated product that attaches to the shavings as I sharpen the product. I would repurchase this if it came as a twist-up, but until then, I’ll have to pass. Also, it’s a drag that my normal sharpener won’t work on this and that I would have to purchase the Nars sharpener that is made to work on very wide pencils like this to be able to get more product out. When I tried using the duo sharpener that I have, the wide side couldn’t fit the pencil in it.

On some lighter notes, this does have a sturdy cap and I have yet to have a problem with it causing a mess in my bag. The texture of the outer material feels very soft and luxurious, which adds to the sophisticated personality that the brand is known for. The lettering is also pretty resilient which is another plus because one of my biggest peeves with poor packaging is when companies will cut corners with packaging quality and use a cheap material for the lettering that is easily rubbed or scratched off by rubbing up against other products in my bag.

Performance/Wear:                               ★/5

I genuinely do love the lipstick itself and it really is an amazing product, which makes me sadder that I won’t purchase it because of the awful packaging. The formula is so rich and creamy and instantly improves the life of my lips from its intensive conditioning agents, all while providing a load of pigment in the lightest swipe of product on my lips. Thanks to the super-rich texture, this glides on my lips so easily and gently with no tugging or pulling like a lot of lip products will do.

The dusty rose color looks great on many complexions and can double as a cream blush, too! Talk about making the most of your purchase, only I didn’t purchase this. I’m not sure why they recommend using a lip liner under this because it isn’t necessary which is another plus, since it saves you money from having to buy another product and saves your shoulders from a little less weight in your bag from not needing to carry around another product for touch-ups. It does transfer, but that isn’t a deal-breaker in my book, but you will have to touch-up throughout the day after drinking and kissing. The color fades gradually and evenly without any signs of feathering which gives a time buffer in between reapplying in case you can’t get to a mirror at any moment.

A major factor that impressed me was not just how good this felt on my lips, but hours after it was already gone, my lips still felt the benefits of being so well moisturized by this through the wear time. I wouldn’t say this apply a satin finish, since it seems to have more of a cream finish by having a little shine to it. It doesn’t make my lips look fuller, but it does even out any chapped areas and gives me a healthy looking set of lips to wrap my look together.

As it is in the pencil form that requires sharpening, no, this isn’t worth the price. If they repackaged it into a twist-up pencil, then I’d vouch for it.
