I got his full-size liner in my Glossybox subscription from a limited-edition box and I have to admit I wasn’t exactly excited about it. I don’t mean to sound ungrateful, but since most lipsticks currently on the market make lip liners obsolete, this seemed a bit of a waste to me. For the sake of not being wasteful, I am still going to use it until I’m out, but I can tell you right off the bat, not based on quality, but for the fact that lip liners are unnecessary nowadays, I won’t be repurchasing this.
With that being said, if you’re someone who still feels more comfortable using lip liners and you want to know how this product holds up, you’re welcome to read on.
Those of y’all who have read some of my previous reviews probably saw this low rating coming at no surprise. I am entirely against products that require sharpening because I feel like I’m forced to throw away half of my product that’s attached to the shavings when I sharpen this. This isn’t a cheap lip liner to being with so knowing that I’ll be tossing out half of it is just insulting. I think we’ve come far enough in packaging advancements that sharpening should no longer be necessary and everything that was packaged that way should just be a twist-up.
The cap seems to be more secure than most other lip or eye liners, but still unreliable, nonetheless. The texture of the pencil feels luxurious in the sense that it feels soft and smooth, other than the writing, of course.
Performance/Wear: ★ ★ ★ ★ ★/5
The performance of this makes me sad about it being a lip liner in the first place and its awful packaging because it really is a great product. I have found very few lip liners that apply this smoothly without me needing to make that awkward face where I stretch my lips out to get an even line around my lips, but this does. Also, I don’t have to go over the same area to get decent coverage because one swipe over an area and it’s set! It feels very lightweight on my lips and provides an even, matte finish without enhancing or causing any dryness in my lips. I do enjoy how buttery it feels when applying it; that was truly awesome experiencing. You never realize how bad previous products are until you try something that is so gentle on your skin and this was one of those, but that’s just another reason I’m sad I won’t repurchase this.
There isn’t a scent that I could tell with this, so that’s a plus for those who are have headaches or migraines that are easily triggered by smells. This is true to its word about not feathering and being waterproof, but it’s only waterproof on its own. When I apply another lip product over this, that changes the results depending on whether or not what I put over it is also waterproof. Most of the lip products I wear transfer, so this ends up doing the same, but on the plus side, it fades gradually and evenly with whatever lip product I wear over it.
I can’t really vouch that this makes my lips look fuller, but they do feel healthier, thanks to the moisturizing ingredients used in the formula. It works well with various lip products worn under (lip balm) and over (lipsticks and glosses) in the sense that it keeps them from bleeding, but not in the sense that it makes whatever I layer over it waterproof or guarantee it won’t feather. For example, when I wear this with the Too Faced Melted Liquid lipstick, this holds up just fine, but when I wear it with Kat Von D’s matte liquid lipstick, this feathers regardless because of the drying ingredients in the lipstick counteract and overpower the conditioning effects of the lip liner; it all just depends what you use it with, but most lipsticks work with this.
This color matches my natural lip color almost perfectly and from what I’ve seen online, the other options aren’t as close, but they can be used to darken or lighten a lip color to suit your preference. Luckily, the company makes lipsticks that I would consider getting instead of another lip liner, but alas, they also require sharpening so that’s a bust.
Maybe if it didn’t require sharpening and wasting product/money and maybe if this was their lipstick and not their lip liner, I’d vouch for the price, but I can’t for either. Lip liners are so unnecessary today and I can’t recommend it to anyone with a clear conscience.
