For those who’ve read my blog before, you may have noticed I mentioned this lip balm in my review on the Clinique – Chubby Stick™ Moisturizing Lip Colour Balm: Crayola™ (Razzmatazz), but I hadn’t yet posted a review on this. Both are favorites of mine when it comes to lip balms, but this one still supersedes Clinique’s because this contains SPF in it while Clinique’s does not. I initially fell in love with this product when I got it as a birthday gift set from Sephora in minis of the Rose and Clear tubes. Both are amazing, but the Rose caught my attention because it was everything I could ever want in a lip balm, but this had color in it. Since then, I’ve invested in a few colors from the line because I live first a foremost by lip balms, then by other lip products like lipsticks and lip glosses.
Depending on how and if I wear makeup that day, I will use this as either the last step in my skincare routine (no makeup days) or the first step in my makeup routine (makeup days). Applying it first on days I wear makeup preps my lips with intense moisturizing, smooths out my lips so lip products go on evenly, and it adds color to intensify whatever color I’m wearing. Of course, I’ll coordinate the lip balm to whatever lip color I wear, but I mostly use Petal because its dusty rose, pink color matches my natural lip color the best.
Did I mention this smells like lemonade? YUM! This earns bonus points for smelling light and refreshing with my favorite citrus smell! Obviously, I couldn’t help but taste some off my lips to see if the smell matched the taste (is that weird?) and to my disappointment, it doesn’t. That’s probably a good thing, though because I’m sure I’d end up using this up way faster and reapplying more often, although unnecessary, just to get more yummy lemonade taste on my lips, and for $24 each, that’s a bit steep.
From the first time I used this product (2010? 2011?), I fell in love with how amazing it felt on my lips and have expanded my collection of the colors since then, including this marvelous mauve color. Normally I had stuck with Chapstick my whole life up until then, but I got the two free minis so why not try them? Anyone who’s tried these lip balms can vouch that once you see and feel the difference this makes on your lips, you’ll never cut corners with cost again. This is not the lightest feeling lip balm, but for all the amazing conditioning and moisturizing it does, I’m surprised it doesn’t feel way heavier. It has a nice balance between heavy and light because it isn’t so heavy that it feels like it just sits on my lips without penetrating my skin’s layers, while not feeling so light that it dries up quickly or bleeds through my lip line.
The tinted lip balms are perfect for those who love a minimal makeup look and for those who love to get glammed out because it wears well alone, providing a natural flush of color, and works great as a preparatory base that adds color prior to your main lip product and intensifies that color. What’s even better is that this has SPF build in it, so you can rest easy knowing your lips are protected from sunburns without that dreaded white cast than many products that contain SPF do.
This works well with various other lip product formulas, especially the matte formulas. I initially thought it wouldn’t because this seems more oil based and that would counteract with most matte drying formulas, but it works surprisingly well. Given, I never apply one right after the other. Instead, I apply this as the first step in my makeup routine and the lip product last leaving a gap of time for this lip balm to substantially absorb into my lips but still having a layer on my lips before putting a lipstick over this.
Another wonderful bonus is how jam-packed this is with conditioners that give amazing results with the faintest application! In turn, saving money for consumers not having to restock this as often as I would have to replenish my Chapsticks. I’ve worn this to the beach when it’s windy and sand is flying around, and my lips stay perfect. I’ve worn this hiking on a blazing hot day that border-lined heat exhaustion and still, my lips stayed safe. I’ve even worn this while riding my bike on a windy day through the city and still, this protected my lips. A lot of people forget how damaging environmental factors can be as well as UV rays, but this has you covered from all angles. The best part? It fades evenly, and my lips feel amazing hours after it’s gone meaning this tube of magic keeps working hard even after there is no visible product on my lips.
I’m not the biggest fan of this packaging because the metal makes it a magnet for heat and that doesn’t not make for a good combination to have this with. I’ve lost a few of these lip balms to simply putting this in my pocket or leaving it in my bag on a hot day because they’ll melt to weird forms and they’re never quite the same after. Mostly just the shape and it no longer smells of lemonade, but it makes it awkward to bring along when it’s melted to half of one side of the tube and a bit through the hole in the bottom.
As far as the tube goes, the bulky metal does make it more secure when dropping it and having it in my bag because it’s more resistant to being banged up against by my other bag residents and it doesn’t pop open like most other lip balm caps do. The twist on the cap gives added piece of mind that this is less likely to open up accidentally in a bag and make a mess everywhere. I also like how the colors of the tube coordinate with the colors inside, making it much easier to find the color I want to use that day instead of shuffling through a bunch until I find the right one.
One last bonus is that a lot of these colors can also double as cream blushes, but keep in mind that you’ll probably want to keep it light because of how much moisturizers and conditioners are in this. The color is buildable, but it’ll only get so pigmented, so if you’re looking for true opacity, just layer a good lipstick over this.
I’ll admit, it is quite the jump from the couple of dollars it costs at the drugstore to buy Chapstick, but I can promise you the results are worth it! I, too, had a bit of a heavy heart when I started purchasing the full-sizes because even though I knew how amazing these lip balms are, it’s still hard to justify spending this much on such a small tube of product. With care to avoid heat damage, I can vouch that this lasts significantly longer than any other lip balm I’ve used, so over time, the price evens out while the results still tremendously favor this side (Sugar lip balms) of the scale.
