Say, “hello,” to the best matte lipstick you’ll ever wear on your lips! Yeah, getting straight to the point on this product review because with a product this amazing, I feel like I have to share the news as far and quickly as possible. I have mentioned before in other reviews how much I love this product and it completely slipped my mind that I hadn’t reviewed it yet! This deluxe mini came in a birthday gift set by Tarte from Sephora. If you are one of the few people who have been living under a rock the past few years, Sephora gives a birthday gift to every Beauty Insider every year that you can pick up at any time through your birthday month, with no purchase necessary. Over the years, there have been some hits and misses with their choices of birthday gift sets, but they’re free, so I’m not going to complain since I don’t waste any money if I don’t like them. Last year, it was between the set this came in and a skincare set from Fresh and obviously I chose this one. I don’t mean that to knock the importance of skincare, because let’s be honest, skincare is the crucial foundation to a flawless makeup application. What influenced my decision was the amount of each product in the sets and the fact that I had already tried the products from the Fresh set and found they weren’t for me.
For the longest time, I loathed matte products and began to avoid them like the plague and when I first saw that this was matte, I figured I’d keep the blush out of the set and gift the lipstick to a friend that I knew loved mattes. When I swatched it for the pictures I took during my unboxing for this review, I was astounded how soft and airy the product felt on my skin! Most mattes tug at and dry out my skin, but this felt like that chocolate mousse from a favorite restaurant in a lipstick. This has hands-down become my new favorite lip product and gave me new hope in matte lipsticks for the future.
The birthday included this lipstick and the Tarte – Amazonian 12-Hour Blush (Paaarty):
Did I mention how airy and light this felt on my skin? Okay, just checking that I didn’t leave that crucial detail out because let’s be honest, that is a key factor in what makes this matte lipstick change the game for all lipsticks from here on out. This feels so much healthier for my lips than many of my cream lipsticks that are jam-packed with all sorts of moisturizing goodness, without all the weightiness. The pigment is so intense, and it caught me a bit off-guard because it dries a bit darker than the color looks through the tube. I’m not sure if every color does that, but I’d keep that in mind if you’re considering this one. The shade darkening is the farthest thing from a deal-breaker because the color is still appropriate to the looks that I intended the lighter shade for and it’s still a gorgeous color. I think it might’ve been a different scenario if it had dried to result in an unflattering color with dry patches or settling into lines, but it doesn’t. Oh yeah, this doesn’t settle into fine lines like ColourPop’s liquid lipsticks do on me nor does it bleed or feather as it fades. In fact, it actually fades evenly and gradually which gives a buffer of time to reapply if you’re not by a bathroom that you can run to and touch-up.
The formula feels incredibly moisturizing on my lips which is probably the key factor in what blew my mind away with this and made it my new favorite lippie. For feeling so airy and lightweight on my lips, it feels like it moisturizes and conditions my lips without the need for me to apply lip balm under this. I mention how it dries to a darker color, but it never actually feels like it dries, if that makes sense. It feels like it gently adheres to my lips, while remaining creamy and moisturizing, yet consistently provides a sophisticated matte finish. Since it doesn’t completely dry, it will transfer when taking a drink of water or kissing someone throughout the day, so keep that in mind as to how often you’ll need to reapply. I drink water like a horse and I only ever need to touch up maybe twice, and three times tops if I’m wearing this from early in the morning until late at night (I’m a bit of an insomniac ☹).
This nude/pale mauve color was a great choice for the company to put in the birthday gift set because it is a universally flattering color that looks great with many looks for every season.
You won’t hear any complaints from me regarding the packaging for this lipstick because this is the ideal setting for me. I prefer lipsticks to come in a tube with a wand because it makes for more sanitary use in my kit when I can just wipe the wand tip off on my palette and use a lip brush to apply, aside from trying to slice off a piece from a lipstick tube that risks breaking the entire stick off the base. Also, the soft, wand tip makes for quick, easy, gentle, and precise applications that save time which is the most important thing a product can do. Saving time while still providing amazing results is the key to a great product and the company tied that formula into a pretty little bow…er, tube…for us. I love the clear bottom half to the tube because it makes finding the color I want to use that day that much easier and faster, again, saving me time. I get annoying with products who try too hard to look sophisticated that they cover the color/shade of whatever the product is, which makes me waste time having to open and close a bunch of different tubes until I find the color I’m looking for. That alone is another reason I reach for this more often than others because I can immediately see what color I’m grabbing, and I don’t have to waste time searching through products.
Tarte kept the overall design of the packaging simple, yet classy and I really dig it. It gives a first impression of a luxury vibe to the product, without overwhelming the packaging with too many details. Using small details to ensure a sense of class to the packaging while keeping the décor minimal allows the product quality to speak for itself and this one sings Dermot Kennedy songs while taking a break by a stream in the woods during a hike. Yes, hiking is my happy place and Dermot is my current favorite artist, but I think anyone with any taste in music and location preference can agree that this lipstick is a happy place in a tube.
The compact size makes it great for traveling, and that’s including the full-size product. I have been to Sephora and swatched other colors on my hands and can vouch that the slender size of those tubes also make it a great travel companion, whether you’re heading to the gym or on vacation.
I’m pretty sure I’ve mentioned how pigmented this is enough times already, but I’ll do it one more time just in case. Since this is intensely pigmented with just one layer, this product lasts a lot longer than most other lipsticks that require layering to achieve the same opacity as this one. Between that and how amazing and healthy this feels for my lips, this is more than worth it and kind of makes me sad for how much money I’ve wasted on previous matte products that were garbage.
