I got this little gem in a Sephora Favorites lip set and from the first moment I tried it, I fell in love! That’s the main reason I buy those sets; to try out brand name products without shelfing out the price tag for them until I know it’s worth the investment. This color in particular is a bit dark for my general preference because I don’t wear dark colors often, so they end up passing their shelf lives before they’re used up, but surprisingly, I really like it. It sucks that it makes me look even more pale than I already am, but man, does this intense color demand attention and respect. Anyone who wears this color is wearing the statement, “Look, but be careful because you’ll regret it if you touch.” I feel like such a badass when I wear this and I know that may sound silly describing a lipstick, but I think we can all agree there are things we’ve worn, whether they be clothes or makeup, that make our confidence beam through ourselves. Its scent is faintly perfumed, but in a good way for me. The smell isn’t like one of those overpowering, nauseating, or just plain awful smells, this smells sweet, but romantic in my opinion. I love this spin on the usual matte lipsticks by making it a velvet finish to boot. That detail alone sets this amazing lipstick apart from all the other liquid lipsticks on the market. Before this, I had only ever used Ciaté’s nail polishes, and from my awesome experience with this bad boy, I’m excited to get other colors!
Voodoo: Rich black cherry color that’s universally flattering.
Performance/Wear: ★ ★ ★ ★ ★/5
Did I mention how much I LOVE this thing? In case I haven’t, let me reiterate for just a bit. This not only has a bold color to it, but the pigment in it is so intense that it doesn’t budge for hours, nor does it apply streaky. I have used a lot of dark lip colors that look streaky and tacky when you are arm’s-length away, but this has so much opacity to it with even the lightest swipe of color. I never need more product than from when I initially pull the wand out of the tube so this product lasts a while for me. The texture is so creamy and rich, I didn’t think this would actually end up drying matte, but it did. Yet, it never made turned my lips like the Sahara Desert like most other matte lipsticks do. Despite it being a dark color, this genuinely does make my lips look fuller as the company promises. It does transfer slightly and when it fades, it looks ombre and not all blotchy like some other mattes do. Just like many other liquid lipsticks on the market, this also doesn’t bleed which saves money and time from needing to apply a lip liner. What surprised me the most is that this not only didn’t dry out my lips, but it actually felt like it slightly moisturized my lips during the wear time. This comes in a close second to my current favorite matte liquid lipstick from Tarte, and it may honestly beat it out because you get slightly more product for a dollar less with this one instead of the Tarte one. I know this may sound cliché, but when this lipstick ‘dries’ (I say it like that because it never feels like it dries because it retains its creaminess the entire time I wear it.) it actually does look like velvet material on my lips. I know, I know, they say that just to market the product to make it sound more appealing, but it genuinely does every time I wear it. Another lovely surprise is that I don’t need to apply lip balm prior to applying this because of its moisturizing benefits which saves me not only money from replacing my lip balms faster, but also from replacing my skincare products that I buy specifically to target and fix my lips when they get damaged by over-drying products. I don’t have to spend any extra time or effort trying to remove this at night when I wash my face because it comes off as easily as it’s applied and it doesn’t stain, so I’m not left looking like an emo Ronald McDonald for a few hours after. As I mentioned with the ombre, I wanted to also clarify that it doesn’t feather as it fades nor does it sink and enhance the look of the creases in my lips. It seems more to fill them in, giving the illusion of my lips being full with a smooth texture.
Price: ★ ★ ★ ★/5
In comparison to drugstore makeup, this price is ridiculous. On the other hand, in comparison to other luxury brand makeup, this is on the cheaper side of the price range which I can get behind. I’m torn on where this lies on my favorites list because it really is an amazing product, so good it seems identical to my favorite from Tarte, but it’s cheaper, meaning I’m more likely to reach for this product in store or online. With everything beneficial that comes inside this tube of wonder, it’s worth the price.
Packaging: ★ ★ ★ ★ ★/5
I want to start off by giving kudos to the company for the attention to detail on their packaging. This may be a deluxe mini, but they didn’t cut any corners in order to pinch pennies and for that, I say, “Thank you, Ciate!” The little bows are just the cutest little detail along with the fun font that they use. The tube itself is sturdy because I have yet to be a victim of vandalism in my bags from this and the small size makes it more ideal to bring along with me to save space and weight. The soft tip on the wand not only makes application gentle, but also precise and easy. I love liquid lipsticks in general because the wands are so much easier for application than in traditional tubes.
