Laura Mercier – Foundation Primer (Radiance)

Product Info

Online Description:

What it is:
A lightweight, creamy gel that creates an invisible barrier between skin and makeup to prime your face for color.

What it does:
Worn under foundation, this illuminating primer creates a smooth, flawless canvas for application, allowing foundation to glide on easily and stay fresh and color-true for hours. Ideal for all skin types, the universal pearl tint creates a soft-focus effect to minimize the look of imperfections with a radiant finish. It’s the first step to Laura’s “Flawless Face.” Dermatologist-tested and non-comedogenic, it is formulated with antioxidants vitamins A, C, and E; Prestige Soft Focus Pearls; and skin-conditioning Jojoba.

What else you need to know:
Just as a painter primes a canvas, Foundation Primer—the original—was created by Laura Mercier in 1995 to prime the skin. After creating the industry’s first primer, she “reinvented” it and made a version that added soft highlights, luminosity, and radiance to skin. A lightweight, creamy vitamin-rich gel that prepares the skin for makeup application, it creates an even, invisible layer that acts as a buffer to outside elements and expertly holds foundation. This water-based formula not only keeps makeup staying fresh and color-correct for hours but also helps perfect skin tone over time.

Suggested Usage:
-Apply over moisturizer or onto clean skin before a Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer or Foundation.

My Thoughts:

I got this little beauty in a Sephora Favorites set (valued at $11.18) and I love it! This seems to work best under either a tinted moisturizer, bb cream, or cc cream. Any more coverage than those, and it kind of defeats the purpose of the shimmer in the primer. This doesn’t have a smell to it nor does it cause a reaction to my sensitive skin like some primers like the Figs & Rouge primer do. The consistency & texture are perfect because it isn’t too thick or too thin, allowing it to apply and distribute easily, without tugging or pulling and it dries quickly. This has quite a bit of shimmer to it so I also like to use it as a luminizer over foundation as well. The packaging isn’t ideal, but I just move it into an older bottle with a pump that I repurpose for this type of occasion to make it easier to use. This is a great product for makeup minimalists and people who like a multi-purpose product. I’m so glad I snagged the set this came in because I’ll definitely be repurchasing it for my MUA kit.

Performance/Wear:                          ★/5

This has quite a bit of shimmer to it, but I don’t suggest using anything over light coverage or it won’t show through. The formula is thin, yet creamy making it perfect for a quick application making it that much more ideal to be a permanent piece in my makeup kit. Saving time is essential in not only everyone’s day-to-day makeup routine, but also when working on makeup clients. When I work on site, application has to be as quick as possible while looking like it took hours to make flawless. It works well with various formulas whether it is worn under as a primer or over as a face highlighter. So far, it is compatible with every skin tone and complexion working just as seamlessly on fair skin to dark skin and sensitive skin to oily. With the perfect consistency, I never need more than a dime-sized amount for each application, making this tube last longer than most other formulas. Personally, I am not a fan of using this on a daily basis because I don’t like to have shimmer all over my face, but I will repurchase this because it is perfect for bridal clients. This provides a subtle glow that perfect for the bride and entire bridal party. The trick I use it apply a thin layer of this, let it dry, then apply a second layer and let that dry, then apply foundation and continue with the makeup look. That way, the shimmer is seen through the foundation, but doesn’t cause a Tin Man effect. This also works as a great eyeshadow primer if you’re in a pinch. The formula is thinner than the normal eyeshadow primers I use, but it still works just the same. What I love about wearing this under my favorite light coverage products, like tinted moisturizer, is how it makes my skin look more awake. On days that you can tell I didn’t get enough sleep and my skin is a bit dull, I use this under my tinted moisturizer or cc cream and I look spruced up and ready to conquer the day. Yay, light-reflecting sorcery!

Price:                                                   ★/5

The price isn’t the worst, to be honest. Yes, ideally it would be cheaper, but we all have to make sacrifices for quality over quantity. What makes this stand out is that it is multi-purpose making it that much more of an ideal product to use without having to buy different products and rushing to use them before their shelf lives are up.

Packaging:                                          ★/5

As usual, I am not a fan of the squeeze-tube packaging. It would be more ideal if it came in a tube with a pump, making it much less painful to use for those of us with hand and wrist pain. Also, the bottom of the tube likes to hide product when it seems like it’s empty so I have to take scissors and my makeup spatula to it when it gets there.
