What it is:
A collection of classic, wood-barrel lip pencils in neutral, lip-tone inspired shades.
What it does:
With high precision texture that defines the lip line, The Lip Pencil provides perfect, allover, opaque lip coverage. Bite Beauty’s lightest formula yet, it offers addictively creamy coverage that’s so lightweight it feels like nothing on your lips. The case is an artisanal wood barrel that encapsulates whipped shea butter and three times the amount of pigments for a perfectly defined line.
-Begin by prepping the lips with line and define primer, then line the contour of the lips and fill in with a matching shade of the lip pencil.
-Finish the look by applying a layer of your favorite Amuse Bouche Lipstick.
I’m not the biggest fan of lip liners to be honest, but this is so surprisingly creamy that it may have changed my opinion of lip liners altogether. Most lipstick formulas nowadays render lip liners obsolete so I wasn’t terribly convinced that this would change my mind on that. After all, who wants to go back to the necessity of buying 2 products for one look? Also, I hate the tugging that comes with lip liners when applying them, but this doesn’t have that downside. Another issue I have with lip liners in general is they tend to not even hold up with their purpose throughout the day. So, obviously this has a few hurdles to jump before I could be convinced that purchasing lip liner would be worthwhile. The color itself is perfect for more natural lip looks because it’s only a tad lighter than my natural lip color. It works with various lip product formulas without the quality faltering and they don’t play around with the pigment intensity. The smell isn’t a deal breaker because the smell of wood doesn’t offend me. That’s really all I can smell and I know it’s from the pencil itself and not the actual cream product in the pencil.
Performance/Wear: ★ ★ ★ ★ ★/5
Overall, I was impressed. Short and sweet, right? This definitely exceeded my expectations as far as all those downsides I mentioned above. The texture was so creamy and applied like a dream! I expected to sit there for a few minutes making those iconic, funny faces that lip products make us do to apply them evenly, yet it blew me away when it didn’t even take me a minute. Seriously, like butter, y’all! Then, no tugging on my lips and you know what that means! No irritation for my skin means no redness or speeding up the aging process. By that, I mean constant stress on the skin will cause wrinkles to show up sooner than anticipated. Ever notice people who smile a lot show their ‘parenthesis’ around their mouths much sooner and prominently than those who maintain a constant RBF? Exactly. The results aren’t immediate, obviously, but that isn’t an excuse to do it until you start seeing signs of aging because you’ll just be spending way more money on skincare products trying to reverse it. Next topic up for discussion: wear-ability. This also impressed me by not only giving quite a bit of intensity to the lipstick I wore over this, but also lasting throughout the day. My lipstick looked like it had way more ‘oomph’ than it has with my clear lip liner or worn alone. Brighter colors seemed so much more vibrant, dark colors looked bolder, and nudes looked more opaque and flawless. The only time I had to use this product again after initially applying it was after I finished eating because I wipe off my lip products so they don’t smudge. Normally, I have to touch up everything (lip liner, lip stick, & lip gloss, if I’m using lip gloss that day) throughout the day from talking and drinking water, but this held in place well enough that I only needed to touch-up my lipstick &/or lip gloss. There’s no bleeding or smudging of any kind when I used this and bleeding is a huge issue with some lip products, despite their description stating otherwise. My lips don’t feel dried out with this which saves money and product because I don’t have to wipe off all my lip products that I’m wearing that day to apply lip balm and then reapply.
Regardless how awesome this product is, I can’t justify recommending anyone spending $20 on this little bit of product. It’s not like this only uses a little at a time for each application. For the amount of pigment payoff and the smooth application, it uses its fair share of product for each application. Sorry, I’m not sorry for the 1 star. Like I said before, most lip products are formulated to not need lip liners, so just stick to those and save the money from spending this.
I hate anything that requires sharpening as much as I hate squeeze tubes. Sharpening wastes half of the product in my opinion because product shaves off with the wood pieces. Not to mention, the lid is incredibly unreliable and falls off any chance it gets. It seems to have a mind of its own and deliberately finds ways to remove its cap to smear on something.
