My Thoughts:

I wasn’t too thrilled to see this in my Glossybox because it’s already a product I’ve used on and off for a few years, but it did give me the ability to have a travel size to take with me next time I’m away from home. There’s always a silver lining, right? Alright, so these products have me as a devil’s advocate. On one hand, they do EXACTLY as advertised, meaning that they exfoliate and thoroughly cleanse your scalp for optimum hair growth. On the other hand, they don’t explain that because these products are designed for the scalp. With that being said, these products require a lot more maintenance with your regular shower routine that your usual shampoo and conditioner. These bad boys are meant to benefit your scalp and stimulate hair growth, but it does nothing for the mid-lengths and ends of your hair. What does that mean for you? Well, if this product is designed to thoroughly cleanse any gunky build-up on the scalp and the ends (I’m assuming you have longer than a pixie haircut like myself) get well washed with that, what happens to the ends of your hair that don’t get the natural oils your scalp produces to keep your hair moisturized (that greasy look you get after a few days of not washing your hair)? You guessed it, it leaves your ends drier than hay in a drought. Okay, maybe that’s dramatic but it does dry out your hair because it’s meant to remove and prevent build-up. If you don’t take precautionary measures, that causes your hair to get more split ends and they occur faster than normal, causing breakage and more trips to your stylist with trims occurring faster than your hair can grow. Not cool, huh? Have no fear, your friendly, blogging cosmetologist is here! Kidding! But through trial and error, I have come up with a routine that works with these products and a few others, that preserves your hair and lets Nioxin’s products do their jobs.

And it goes a little like this:

  • When showering, prior to shampooing, apply a moisturizing conditioner to ONLY your mids and ends (if your hair is shoulder length or shorter, just the ends). Use enough to coat your hair lightly, don’t cake it on. Don’t rinse it yet.
  • Apply Nioxin Cleanser to your scalp and lather with your fingertips, NEVER your finger nails. Once your scalp is plenty lathered, work the product down to the ends over the conditioner you had applied.
  • Then apply the Nioxin Conditioner to your scalp ONLY. I like to section my hair into 4 quarters (1 down the middle of my head, another across my head from a little above ear to ear), apply a bit on the roots of each section, then apply some along my hairline and massage it into my scalp to distribute it throughout my scalp. Don’t rinse yet!
  • After that, I used the same moisturizing conditioner from before and apply that to my mids and ends.
  • I initially will finger comb my hair just to make sure there is product evenly distributed throughout my hair and then use a wide-toothed comb to better distribute.
  • Then, I clip up my hair to give the product a couple of minutes to really absorb into my hair while I finish my regular shower routine (face wash, body wash, shower-singing).
  • Once all that other fun stuff is done, then rinsing my hair is the last thing I do before I’m out of the shower.

TADA! See what I meant about WAY more maintenance? Now, I’m not saying this product isn’t worth buying, because as I mentioned earlier, it is. This product does what is promised and if that’s the desired effect you wish, I recommend you putting in the work to preserve the rest of your hair. If not, what’s the point in trying to grow a healthy head of hair if it’s only going to become dry and brittle and break off anyways?
